The United States government recently announced a new passport
initiative to better secure America’s borders. In a media
release the following information sums up the initiative:
The
Departments of State and Homeland Security announced today the
Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative to secure and expedite
travel. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require
all U.S. citizens, Canadians, citizens of the British Overseas
Territory of Bermuda, and citizens of Mexico to have a passport
or other accepted secure document to enter or re-enter the U.S.
by January 1, 2008.

2008 is the deadline for all travelers, but they have instituted
a phased-in timeline for U S Citizens.
- December 31, 2006 –
Requirement applied to all air and sea travel
to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South
America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
- December 31, 2007 –
Requirement extended to all land border
crossings as well as air and sea travel.
